How to play Smoke or Fire

Every player guesses something about the next card off the deck, once per round for four rounds, and keeps each card they draw. Guess wrong and you drink. Guess right and you give drinks to someone else. After round 4, a pyramid of face-down cards gets flipped one row at a time, and every card that matches one in your hand costs or earns you more.

You need a standard 52-card deck (aces are high) and as many players as the deck can handle. With the free version you just need phones, since it deals for you.

1. Smoke or FireSmoke (black) or fire (red)The card is that color: clubs and spades are smoke, hearts and diamonds are fire
2. Higher or LowerHigher or lower than your round 1 cardThe card goes your way. A tie counts as correct
3. Inside or OutsideBetween your first two cards, or outside themThe card lands where you said. Matching either end counts for both

The pyramid. Deal 9 cards face down in rows of 1, 2, 3, 2, and 1, then flip them a row at a time. For each flipped card, every player holding a card of the same value gives or takes that row’s drinks, once per matching card. The rows alternate give, take, give, take, give, and they’re worth 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 drinks.

That’s how the free version plays it. House rules vary a lot (some groups drink on ties), drink amounts are adjustable in settings, and a challenge mode swaps drinks for dares. You can play it free at smokeorfire.vientapps.com with no download or account.

What is it?

Smoke or Fire is the classic party card game, built for phones and the web. Guess whether the next card is red or black, higher or lower, inside or outside. Four rounds, then a pyramid where everyone’s cards come back to haunt them.

Pass-and-play on a single device, or multiplayer with room codes across separate phones.

Features

  • Four-round card guessing game with increasing difficulty
  • Pyramid endgame where matched cards assign drinks to other players
  • Real-time multiplayer via 4-letter room codes
  • Pass-and-play mode for single-device sessions
  • 3D card flip animations on every reveal
  • Customizable drink amounts per round and pyramid row

Why it’s on the web and not the App Store

Submitted to Apple multiple times. Rejected each time under Guideline 1.4.3 (apps that encourage alcohol consumption). Tried every angle: reframing the metadata, removing all alcohol references, positioning drinks as optional scoring. Didn’t matter. The game mechanic is the game mechanic.

It runs in any browser. No install required.

Tech

React Native + Expo + TypeScript. Firebase Realtime Database for multiplayer sync. react-native-reanimated for the card flip animation. Source on GitHub.

Frequently asked questions

Is Smoke or Fire free to play?
Yes. It's completely free and runs in any browser with no download or account. Just open the link and start a game.
Can I play with friends on separate phones?
Yes. One player creates a room and shares the 4-letter code; everyone else joins from their own phone and the game syncs in real time. If you're all together, pass-and-play mode runs the whole game on a single device.
Why isn't it on the App Store?
It was submitted to Apple multiple times and rejected each time under Guideline 1.4.3, which covers apps that encourage alcohol consumption. Reframing the metadata and making drinks optional didn't change the outcome, so it lives on the web instead, where it runs on any device with no install.
How do you play Smoke or Fire?
Over four rounds you guess the next card: smoke (black) or fire (red), higher or lower than your first card, inside or outside your first two cards, then the suit. A wrong guess means you drink, and a right one lets you give drinks to someone else. Then 9 cards go face down in a pyramid and flip one row at a time. Anyone holding a card of the same value gives or takes that row's drinks, from 1 on the first row up to 5 on the last.
What happens on a tie in Smoke or Fire?
In the free version a tie counts as a correct guess. A card equal to your round 1 card is right for both higher and lower, and a card equal to either end of your range is right for both inside and outside. Plenty of groups play it the other way and drink on a tie, so settle that before the first round.
What is it built with?
React Native, Expo, and TypeScript, with Firebase Realtime Database handling multiplayer sync and react-native-reanimated driving the 3D card-flip animation. The source is on GitHub.
